The theme that converts the sceptics

Belly Dance Hen Party Dance Class NewcastleShimmy first, Ouseburn after.

Nobody in your group has done this before, and that turns out to be the entire point. Belly dance runs on isolations — hips, ribs and shoulders moving one at a time — so the first ten minutes are pure comedy and the next eighty are twelve people discovering muscles they had forgotten about. Your teacher builds the sequence in the room, reading which hens want the middle and which want the back row, in one of three rooms we hire across the city or out at your hen house anywhere in the North East. £170 buys the full ninety minutes and £145 the hour, with only the venue’s hire cost on top — and no dance experience is required, just a willingness to look daft for a bit.

Dates and figures

Tell us when, roughly.

Three things get you a real answer: the date, a rough headcount, and any thought on a start time. Within the day you will know whether a teacher is free, which of the three rooms fits your numbers, and exactly what the two costs are — teaching fee and venue hire, written separately so nothing hides. Still undecided on theme? Hold the date anyway; changing what you dance to later is free.

Why it converts sceptics

Nobody is ahead of anybody.

The reason a belly dance hen party dance class works on a mixed group is that it flattens everyone at the door. The bridesmaid with ten years of ballet behind her has no head start on the auntie who has not danced since a wedding in 1998, because neither of them has ever asked their ribcage to move on its own. Ten minutes in, the room stops performing and starts laughing, and that is the exact moment a hen do dance class becomes an actual party. It is also the gentlest thing on the whole list: no jumping, no floor work, nothing that punishes a late one on Grey Street the night before. Of the hen party ideas that get shortlisted in this city, this is the one that most reliably prises the reluctant ones off the sofa — and as dance hen party formats go, it photographs far better than anybody expects.

1Zero impact, all evening. No jumping and no floor work, so knees and Friday-night feet both survive intact.
2Coin belts are yours to bring.Something with jingle on it helps, but we do not stock, lend or hire any of it out.
3Built for absolute beginners. The whole premise is that nobody standing in the room has tried it before.

What they said after.

Half of us went in convinced we would hate it and every single one of us had ordered a coin belt within a fortnight. The teacher never once made anybody feel daft.

My mam is seventy-one and she was in the front row by the end. That is the bit I will remember, more than the night out that followed it.

Belly dance, answered.

the six every organiser asks ↓

Do we need coin belts or hip scarves?+

They help, because the jingle tells you when you are on the beat, but nothing is supplied by us — a scarf with coins on it is yours to source and plenty of parties simply knot a scarf round the waist instead. The class works perfectly in leggings and bare feet.

Is belly dancing hard if we are total beginners?+

It is unfamiliar rather than hard, which is a different thing. Isolating one part of the body while the rest stays still feels impossible for about eight minutes and then suddenly does not. Your teacher pitches everything at whoever is finding it toughest, so nobody spends the session at the back feeling lost.

What does a belly dance hen class cost in Newcastle?+

The whole group pays £170 for ninety minutes, or £145 for an hour, and the venue hire sits on top as a second figure. Both are written down before anything is agreed, and if the class happens in the house you have rented, that second figure disappears entirely. Nothing here is priced per person.

Will this work with a big age range?+

There is no impact, no speed requirement and no floor work involved, so a group running from twenty-two to seventy-five ends up doing the same sequence at the same moment instead of splitting into the fit half and the polite half. Very few themes on the list manage that trick.

How does this fit around dinner and drinks?+

Most groups take a late-afternoon slot, change, and are eating by seven — Newgate Street and Neville Street both sit a few minutes from town. The hip work has a habit of reappearing on the dance floor later, which is generally taken as a sign it landed.

Can the theme still change after we book?+

Yes, and it costs nothing. The booking holds your date and your room, not your choice of music, so if the committee stages a coup a week out we simply teach whatever won instead.

If the hips aren’t having it.
