A dance class, not a theatre ticket

SIX the Musical Hen Party Dance Class NewcastleSix queens. However many of you.

First, the obvious clarification: this is a private hen party dance class taught by a dance teacher in a room we hire, and not a booking for the show itself. What it borrows is the staging — six queens, six attitudes, pop-concert energy and unison sharp enough to look deliberate. Your teacher hands out characters, then writes the number in real time around whoever your group actually are, which is why the quiet cousin often ends up as the one everybody watches. Everyone in the room is covered by £170 over ninety minutes or £145 over sixty, with the venue’s hire cost quoted on top. No experience required, and no Tudor wardrobe either, since anything you wear is your own.

Howay, pick a date.

Give us the date, an approximate number and any preference on start time. You will hear back inside the day: whether the date is free, which of the three rooms fits a group your size, and what the class and the hire each come to, in writing and kept apart.

canny groups hold the date first and argue about who gets Anne later.

Why it works on a hen do

Six parts, one room.

This theme gives a room something almost nothing else on the list does: six distinct characters, which means six different jobs, which means nobody is anonymous at the back. A SIX hen do dance class starts by working out who suits which energy — and it is rarely the person the group would have guessed — before any choreography happens at all. The style is pop rather than theatre: sharp arms, close unison, a lot of attitude and very little that demands technique. That makes it unusually kind to beginners while still looking finished on video, which is the combination most parties are actually after. It handles big groups gracefully too; more than six of you simply means the parts double up, and a group of nine or fifteen tends to look better for it. Among hen party ideas taken from the stage, this one hands the most people something specific to do, and as a dance hen party it is the sharpest-looking of the lot on film. Wardrobe is your own — we supply, lend and hire out nothing whatsoever.

Coats down, parts handed out

Characters get allocated in the first few minutes, usually by watching rather than asking.

ii

Attitude before choreography

Ten minutes of posture, stance and glare, which is where most of the finished look comes from.

iii

Unison, built section by section

Short blocks, drilled until they lock together, with the teacher deciding on the day how far to push it.

iv

Filmed, then out

One clean take while the sharpness is still there, and Grey Street is minutes away for pictures after.

A stage, of sorts.

Unison needs a mirror and a straight line more than it needs floor space, and all three of the rooms we hire give you both. Your quote says which room is held for you and what its hire costs, before anything is signed off.

Twelve of us meant two of each queen and it looked far better than six would have. The bride refused to answer to anything but Catherine Parr for the rest of the night.

I assumed we had booked something to do with the show and had to be told twice that it was a proper dance class. It was much better than a theatre trip would have been.

SIX, clarified.

seven questions, mostly about what this actually is.

Is this the show or a dance class?+

A dance class. We are not a box office, and this has nothing to do with tickets, dates or venues for the production itself. What you are booking is a private session for your hen party, taught by a dance teacher, in a room we hire or at your own hen house.

Which of the queens do we each get?+

Decided in the room by the teacher, usually within the first five minutes and usually not the way the group would have guessed. If there are more than six of you the parts double up, which tends to look stronger rather than weaker.

What does the SIX class come to in total?+

It comes to £170 for the ninety or £145 for the hour, plus the venue’s hire cost as its own line, for all of you together and with no per-head arithmetic hiding anywhere. Take it to your own hen house and there is nothing at all to pay for the room.

Do we need Tudor costumes for the class?+

Not a stitch of it. Whatever anyone wears comes out of their own wardrobe; we hold nothing in stock. Leggings and trainers are what most parties turn up in and the choreography does not care either way.

Is it suitable if we have never danced?+

It is one of the better themes for exactly that. No experience is expected, the style is attitude-led rather than technical, and short repeated blocks are far easier to hold onto than long flowing sequences. Sharpness reads as skill on camera, and sharpness is mostly just commitment.

Can we book it before a night out?+

That is the usual pattern. Late afternoon in a central room, a quick change, photographs on Grey Street, then wherever the evening has been booked. Two of the three rooms sit within a few minutes of the bars.

How many of us can fit in the room?+

Comfortably up to around twenty-two in the largest of the three, and small groups are equally fine because the fee does not change with the count. Tell us your rough number and we will say plainly which room suits it.

If another crown wins.
