The 1996 argument, finally settled

Spice Girls Hen Party Dance Class NewcastleFive personalities, one Tyneside floor.

Nobody has to be taught who they are. The casting row starts on the minibus and is over before the coats are off, and from that point a Spice Girls hen party dance class more or less assembles itself. Your teacher takes whatever five-way chaos the room hands over and builds the number around it, composed on the day for your lot and nobody else’s, in one of three rooms we hire across the city or out at the hen house wherever the weekend is based. £170 for ninety minutes with the whole party in, £145 for the hour, and only the venue’s hire cost added to either. No experience needed — the chorus does the heavy lifting.

Check the date

So tell us what you want.

Really, though: the date, a rough head count and a thought on start time. Inside the day you’ll have an answer on availability, whichever of the three rooms fits your numbers, and two written figures — the teaching fee and the room’s hire cost, kept separate so you can see what is what. Still fighting over the theme? Book the slot as undecided and settle it nearer the time for nothing extra.

friendship never ended, the group chat just went quiet ✦

Two minutes with one thumb and the date is pencilled.

You’ll hear back from a human within the day.

Why this one keeps winning

Everyone already knows their part.

Ask a room of thirty-somethings to name a Spice Girl and you get five hands and a lot of shouting; ask the same room to dance and, oddly, the same thing happens. That instant recognition is why a Spice Girls hen do dance class needs no run-up. The tunes are already in everyone’s legs, and the five personalities hand the teacher five ready-made roles to hang a routine on. The bride gets the front for the chorus whether she wants it or not. The aunties get the pointing bits. Everybody gets a line of their own.

It also solves the awkward middle of the afternoon. A dance hen party fills the gap between lunch and the table booking with something the group will still be quoting over breakfast, which is more than most hen party ideas manage — and unlike the hen party activities built around drinking, this one works perfectly well at two in the afternoon in a room full of people who have not danced since a wedding in 2019.

01Casting is free entertainment. The five-way row over who gets which role warms the room up long before we start.
02Wardrobe is entirely yours.Union Jack dress, leopard print or joggers — whatever you bring is what we work with, since we stock none of it.
03It sounds enormous.Five-part shapes make a group of twelve look like a stadium act by about the second run-through.

Coats off, casting done

Bags in the corner, teacher introduced, and the last argument about who is Scary settled by democratic shouting.

Shapes before steps

Ten minutes of daft nineties posing that turns out to be the vocabulary for everything that follows.

The number takes shape

Which tracks, which formation, who gets shoved to the front — decided in the room by the room, not printed off beforehand.

One take for the phones

The last run gets filmed properly, so the wedding slideshow has something to open with.

no two Toon parties leave with the same routine — that is rather the point

Ninety minutes£170+ the venue’s hire cost

Room for all five personalities, a proper finale and the filming — the version most groups end up taking.

One hour£145+ the venue’s hire cost

Tighter, louder, still finishing on a chorus everybody knows. Ideal when the restaurant will not move the booking.

Where it happens

Three floors, take your pick.

Every room we hire has a floor that takes trainers, mirrors enough for a dozen people to check themselves in, and a door that shuts on the rest of the world. Your quote names which one you are in and what that room costs, in writing, before anybody commits to anything.

What the group said.

Twelve of us, ages nineteen to sixty-four, and every single one knew the words. My mam has watched the video roughly forty times since.

We booked it as the filler between lunch and the Bigg Market and it turned out to be the bit everyone still talks about.

Spice, questioned.

the seven every organiser asks first ↓

Do we have to dress up as the Spice Girls?+

Only if the group fancies it. Costumes are yours to find, borrow or ignore — we hold no wardrobe and hand nothing out — and the routine plays exactly the same in leggings. Most parties land somewhere in the middle: the bride in something obviously Ginger and everyone else in black.

Which songs will the routine actually use?+

Your teacher decides that after one look at who turned up. They arrive with the whole back catalogue and pick according to who turned up, how confident the group looks and what the bride reacts to. Requests on the day are welcome; a running order promised weeks in advance would be a different and worse product.

How much does a Spice Girls hen class come to?+

Two numbers, both flat. £170 for ninety minutes or £145 for sixty, covering everyone present, then whatever the venue charges to hire the room — a figure we put in writing alongside the quote. Take the class at your own hen house and that second number disappears entirely.

Is there a minimum or maximum group size?+

Six or twenty-six, the fee is the fee. Smaller parties get more individual attention and bigger ones get better formations; nobody pays more for turning up mob-handed, and no group is ever turned away for being too small to bother with.

Can we do this before a night out in town?+

It is the standard shape of a hen weekend up here. Class mid-afternoon, back to the flat, out for food, then the Diamond Strip — and the Newgate Street room puts you a two-minute walk from the first round. Expect the chorus to reappear on a dancefloor around midnight.

What if half the group cannot dance at all?+

Then they are the normal ones. The teacher pitches at whoever looks least sure and builds up from there, which is why nobody gets left at the back counting under their breath. Nineties pop is forgiving: point, strut, hair flick, done.

What if we fall out over the theme later?+

Then change it, right up to about a week beforehand. The booking holds your date and your room; the theme is only a note attached to it, so if the group votes for something else in the meantime nothing needs redoing and nothing extra is charged.

If somebody demands a recount.
